Hamilton Park, Pasadena

Two lighted courts in very good condition.

One side faces the Sierra Madres. When you’re playing on that side it is hard to think about anything other than Grandeur.

The other side faces the long flat green expanse of the park. It drops off beyond the softball field at the Edge of the World.

Hamilton Park is you and the sky and the mountains and the game.

This park is truly a jewel.

I like courts like these where the pop of the ball coming off my racket, the skidding of my shoes, and my groans at hitting another return of Gozo’s tricky serves into the net are the only sounds I hear while playing the game. And like you say, it’s a postcard setting. It might get hot up there in the summer, but on a January afternoon it was ideal.

From my tennis diary

I played here with my friend Mike. I told him, “This was one of the happiest days of my life.”

He replied, “Tomorrow will be better.”

Thank you to Mike Bonifer for playing with me on so many Pasadena tennis courts.
