A single unlit court tucked away in a corner of a park itself tucked away in a pleasant subdivision. The court’s isolation has a not unpleasant you-have-stepped-into-a-time-warp feeling, mainly because it edges up against a San Gabriel River embankment that cuts off the horizon.

A glance at the surrounding sand pines and Chinese elms helped keep me rooted. So did getting a call from my daughter just before I took my two practice serves to qualify as playing. She wanted to celebrate it being the many-year anniversary of my little-to-medium episode of brain trauma. I never remember that May 1 is the anniversary until she calls me.

The court itself is a vibrant blue-on-red combination, and it is in good enough shape despite the lack of a net strap.
