Algin Sutton Rec Center, South LA

This hidden gem features two lighted courts in a well-kept park East of Inglewood and North of Watts. Call ahead and the friendly folks at the front desk will unlock the gate for you.

I had the good fortune to play here with my friend Ben B., an excellent listener who keeps getting better every time we play and inspires me to try and do the same.

I remember reading about this mural in Concentrate, a book-length poem by Courtney Faye Taylor about the killing of Latasha Harlins in a South LA liquor store where she was racially profiled. I was surprised to see it here at Algin Sutton in real life and glad to see the colors still glowing. The inscription reads in part "I care by / giving what I have / to people who / actually need it."
