Ladera Park, between Culver City & Inglewood

These two courts are home to an active and diverse tennis community, the subject of a documentary that is, as Coach Scott would say, “sweet as bear meat.” You’ll find the courts south of the basketball court and west of the Little League field where there is always somebody cheering. Ringed by classic SoCal trees — oak, sycamore, pepper, eucalyptus, cedar, pine — the sun beams down from behind these treetops and you feel it, bright and warm.

Frank Scott, Al Gragg, Doc Jones — these guys respectively taught me to switch hands, hit a deep lob (still working on that one, honestly), and put invisible motion on the ball. They and many other dear friends at Ladera welcomed me into this long-running community, for which I am forever grateful.
