Twelve lit and newly resurfaced courts make these the most accessible free public tennis courts anywhere between downtown and the Westside. Historically, courts 1, 2, and 3 are reserved for regulars; courts 4 and 5 for lessons. That leaves plenty of courts typically open for first-come, first-serve. These courts are famous for being where Venus and Serena Williams took lessons as kids, and the inspiring vibe is still there for the taking.

From my journal:

Tommy Lee Childress paying respects at a Rancho Black History Month celebration of local legends like Kwame Alexander, Toussaint McCall, and Mr. Al Green. Tommy Lee, a/k/a Volley King, is an American Tennis Association Hall of Famer with 14 national titles, most on teams coached by another Rancho legend, Verdell Adams.

This is where I started playing tennis again in the early 2000's after a multi-decade dormancy. I'll always be grateful for the kindness of the folks who tolerated my moonballs and stray shots onto other courts while I was getting back in the groove.
