Cheviot Hills Rec Center

Fourteen lighted and meticulously well-maintained courts, with one of the best hitting walls in all of LA County. I wrote about Cheviot Hills in my LA Times story about the best courts in Los Angeles for making friends — not because the vibe here is especially warm and welcoming, but because it’s a centrally-located place on the West Side where if you plan ahead and make a reservation, you can have a swell time developing existing friendships. Tall fences around each court make them each their own semi-private domain.

The courts at Cheviot Hill are some of the nicest public courts I’ve ever played on. The courts are part of Rancho Park, the second largest park in Los Angeles (second only to Griffith Park). Largely set back from the street, the courts are surrounded on two sides by towering pine trees making playing there feel like being in the country and a respite from life in the city. A large walkway between the courts mixes tennis players with all the neighborhood dogs and their owners. The well-maintained, well-lit courts attract players of all ages and levels, including local high school teams who practice there in the afternoon, and stay open late into the evening.
